What is SPF Sunscreen?

Here is a very informative article which gives a detailed explanation about what is SPF, how it measured, and how much UV Ray are they actually blocking. So in a brief list:

  • SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays

  • SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays

  • SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays

Therefore, during a normal summer day, I would recommend around SPF 50 for outdoor activity (such as driving, walking the dogs; Beach day would of course require a much higher SPF due to the water and sweat); and a SPF 30 if mainly stay indoor.

Physical vs. Chemical Sunscreen: Which is Right for You?

After knowing the SPF, now is time to pick the right type! Of course here’s another great article on the difference of physical and chemical sunscreen. For my personal experience, if you are very sensitive skin as I am, physical sunscreen probably would be a better choice for you, since it is basically laying a protection layer on you skin. However, if you hate the white cast on your skin, chemical sunscreen would be your choice.

Pros of Physical Sunscreens:

  • Offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Safe for use on babies and during pregnancy.
  • You skin is protected from the sun as soon as it’s applied; no need to wait before heading outdoors.
  • Less likely to irritate sensitive skin and better for those prone to heat-activated skin conditions such as rosacea.
  • Longer shelf life.

Pros of Chemical Sunscreens:

  • Thinner and spreads on the skin like a lotion, making it ideal for daily use.
  • Less product is needed to protect the skin.
  • Easier to use with other products like peptides and enzymes, giving you skincare boost in a single product.

My Top Pick Sun Screen!

#1 Neutrogena Ultra Dry-Touch Sunscreen SPF 55 3 fl. oz $7.57

Highlight: Dry-Touch as the name implied! lightweight, mattifying feel that won’t clog your pores. This is a chemically formulated liquid sunscreen , and mineral formulation with zinc oxide — which is recommended if you’ve got sensitive skin, heat sensitivities because the mineral formulation sits on top of skin to physically block UVA and UVB rays (as opposed to chemical formulations that sink into skin and absorb rays, which can cause irritation).

#2 La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Light Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 1.7 fl oz $33.5

Highlight: Comes with both chemical and mineral formulations. suitable for face and body! Contains vitamin E (which is a great anti-aging ingredients), herbal extracts, and antioxidants to soothe stressed-out skin and shield you from the sun.

#3 SHISEIDO Urban Environment Oil-Free UV Protector Broad Spectrum Face Sunscreen SPF 42

Highlight: Physical +Chemical formula; Light-weight; Water- and sweat-resistant; fast-absorbing; guards against UVA and UVB rays minus any chalky or sticky residue. Paeonia Albiflora Root Extract: Helps reduce the look of visible pores.  Scutellaria Baicalensis Extract: Helps promote the appearance of youthful-looking skin. Most Importantly, it does NOT irritate around my eye area, and does NOT has any scent.
